Russell Thoburn is a contemporary artist with more than a decades experience of facilitating participatory art projects within the public arts field.
His specialism is working with recycled materials.
"What's fantastic about working in this domain is that many of the materials are familiar to us, yet as an art medium they're relatively new. This often encourages a sense of liberation and curiosity within people. Materials have been stretched and pulled, they've been melted, toasted, ironed, wrapped and platted. Utilising both two and three dimensions, art has been located in and outside; on a minute and massive scale and embraced by individuals and groups from nurseries right through to Elders.
The materials provide an opportunity to explore language/text, colour and our relationship with the environment.
My journey has included working as a special educational needs support assistant, learning mentor, tutor, lecturer, creative agent and a consultant. I have enjoyed each and every role. Difference inspires me. We are all creative and we are all able. Creativity is about opening doors.
My personal work has been exhibited throughout Europe and America, handled by Sotheby's and Harrod's and I've been profiled by Channel 4 and The Sunday Times.
